Hair loss in women

losswomenHair loss in women  is discerning and recognized as a social stigma. Where baldness in men can be typical and even normal, in women this is unacceptable. Losing hair at a young age can be a traumatic experience. Hair loss in women has a negative effect on their psyche and might even lead to low self-esteem. Most women might even be withdrawn as a result of excessive hair loss and balding.

There are several types of hair loss amongst women:

Female pattern baldness

This is called Androgenetic Alopecia. Like men, hair starts thinning from the top of the head. This is the most common cause in women. This kind of baldness is usually less diagnosed in women and is usually genetic in nature.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Also known as PCOs, they can cause growth of facial hair due to hormonal imbalance.

Telogen Effluvium

This is general thinning of hair that happens because of a trauma to the system such as child birth, sudden weight loss, a shock to the system or as a side-effect to a medication. This type of hair loss is usually temporary in nature.

When the body produces inadequate amounts of the thyroid hormone, it leads to hypothyroidism, which is also responsible for mood, heart rate and metabolism – the basal metabolic rate. The thyroid hormone controls growth of nails and hair too thereby leading to hair loss when secreted in little proportions.

Women who menstruate heavily and are deficient in iron-rich foods can experience hair loss due to loss of blood cells.

Seborrheic Dermatitis

This is a condition of the skin of the scalp commonly known as dandruff. An unhealthy scalp usually leads to fungal infection and psoriasis which can cause hair loss.

Styling and blow drying

Immoderate and unrestrained styling of the hair with excessive shampooing and blow drying can cause the skin of the scalp to dry and lead to hair loss. Chemical and heat treatments like straightening of hairs can also cause hair loss.Other factors can also contribute like stress, trauma, immune disturbances, hormonal disturbances, infections, nutritional deficiencies, improper dieting, any major medical illness, medications, chemical treatment of hairs, etc. Dr. Niraj Goenka Offers hair loss treatment for women in India
